Puddles’ Weekend Adventure! The Finale

  • by

The day started out like any other.  I woke up at the usual time.  My clothes were pretty casual.  I went to the studio to do some work.  But unlike any day, this one was going to have a special ending.  With some well-wishes from my coworkers and a ring in my pocket, I made my way down to Olwen’s office to pick her up.  On they way, I called Desmond to confirm the plans for tonight.  Last year I was the cameraman when Des’ proposed to his schoolteacher girlfriend at her elementary school (think Meet the Parents).  I wanted Desmond to be a part of this proposal, so I also asked him to videotape my proposal.  He was in Yakima for an interview and was finishing at 4pm, so we needed to make sure that he was going to be beat to the house before us since Thanksgiving traffic can be unpredictable.  We created some “signals” to use for the trip to time ourselves in the form of two phone calls from Des.  The first call would be to chit chat about his interview; that call would let me know that he was leaving Yakima.  The second call would be to talk about hanging out in Portland with his wife during the long weekend; that call would let me know he was a half-hour away from Portland.  It was kind of cool plan to be covert with the fake calls, but like all well-thought-out plans, we never used them.  Turns out Thanksgiving traffic never showed up on his route, so he beat us home by a good hour and a half.

Puddles’ Weekend Adventure – Part 4

I had over a month left until the proposal.  The most difficult task now was to keep it all a secret from Olwen.  My main concern was with her parents since they’re the ones that I probably would have the least control over.  It turned out that leaks were coming out elsewhere.

After I picked up Olwen from the airport, we headed over to NewGen, my church fellowship.  I had to give Olwen back her car, so I had her drop me off at the fellowship.  We were hanging out on a couch when Christine spotted Olwen and walked up to us.  She welcomed Olwen back and asked about her trip to Rwanda.  And that’s when she said, “Wow, you guys have been doing a lot traveling.  Nolen just got back from Toronto.”

She did not just say that.

Puddles’ Weekend Adventure – Part 3

I got about 5 hours of sleep that night.  I usually have a habit of hitting the snooze button a dozen times before I get my day started, but I resisted and got up.  It was around 9am EST, and no one else in the house was up yet.  Candy had instructed me the night before about how to let myself out in the morning.  As I was making my way to the garage, I bumped into her mom in the laundry room.  She smiled and said something in Chinese that I couldn’t understand.  I tried to act natural, smiled, and mumbled something incoherent as I headed to my car.  I guessed she figured I was one of Candy’s friends.

Puddles’ Weekend Adventure! Part 2

My flight was scheduled for 1:30pm in Vancouver (YVR).  I didn’t want to risk missing my plane, so I woke up that Friday morning at 6am to give me enough time to make the drive (2-3 hrs), get through the border (who knows), and check in my bags and going through security (2 hrs before my flight).  As I was getting ready to leave, I decided to document my trip and snapped a couple photos starting with the alarm clock.  Then I thought, what if I make a documentary of Puddles going to Toronto instead of me?  So I started taking posing Puddles and taking pictures of him waking up, brushing his teeth, checking his email, etc.; making it seem like it was Puddles who was doing the traveling.

Hello, everyone!  Many of you know by now that I have proposed to my girlfriend, Olwen,  of nearly 17 months.  I’ve thankfully received plenty of messages and Facebook postings from friends and family.  Now that the holidays are over, I can start posting the details.  I’ll probably end up breaking the story down into parts for easier reading.

Stupid, stupid, stupid…

When I tried to update to the latest WordPress last night, for some reason, all my drawings that I downloaded off the server got corrupted.  So to make them show up again, I have to go back and upload each one of them all over again.  So if you’re looking for the old material, you’re just gonna have to wait.

Also, the look of this site has changed.  I had to do that since WordPress wasn’t displaying the previous theme properly.  I don’t like it.  Maybe it’s time for a new design for this site…

UPDATE: Thanks to Joe for getting the site fixed this morning!  I owe you, man.

Blockbusters launched!

  • by

Here is my shameless plug for the week.  Last week, Apple finally approved our first iPhone game titled Blockbusters.  It’s a 3D puzzle game where you have to get rid of the colored blocks until you’re left with the red gem resting on the black blocks.

bb1

My work was mainly on the look of the game which included the game elements, the UI, and the logo.  You can check out a free demo here and purchase the full version here.

bb2

We’ll be having our next iPhone game launched within the next couple weeks.  I’ll keep you posted on it.   Come check it out and help me make some money :P

UPDATE:  The links will only work if you have iTunes installed.  If those don’t work, you can always go to the iTunes store and do a search for “Blockbusters.”

Birthday thanks

To Mom and Dad for dinner and the Itzhak Perlman tickets (It’s really something to see the guy at that age barely get across the stage, sit down, and still play the violin better than I ever could).

To my family for their simple, but deeply meaningful gifts. To Olwen for the fancy shmancy pillow and the Domo.

To everyone else, for all their birthday wishes that flooded my inbox and voicemail.  Thanks! :)

0… the end?

So we’re down to zero today, and we’ve reached the end of our story.  For those of you who have been following these drawings since it started at #30, you might be wondering what was the point of this story.  Actually, it began with the end in mind.  The story itself doesn’t necessarily represent anything, it was more of a means to an end.  At the beginning of the month, I wanted to do a series of drawings for every day of the month leading to today, but couldn’t think of anything to lead up to it.  #30 was sort of a random idea that was in my head that evening, and even then I didn’t know how it was going to get to the end.  I kinda had to figure out on the fly how the story was going to finish.  About halfway through, I finally had to sit down and plan out the rest of the drawings to make sure I had enough days to finish it.  I had always wanted to draw this picture for a long time, but the timing was never right.

Or , if you want to go in a more roundabout way, you could say I was too chicken to draw it.

My first credit!

A couple months ago I was helping with lettering a graphic novel for a manga series called TimeFlyz.  Lettering is where I have to take the dialog from the script and arrange them in the word bubbles.  It was my first time doing this and I learned a few things here and there about how a graphic novel is made.  Anyways, the book was published and look what’s on the second page…

Here’s official site and the book link on Amazon.

So there you have it, my first professional credit.  Big thanks goes to Scott for the opportunity!
