Sketch Session No.4

  • by

Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. It was good to get a break and see my family again. I had some friends visit from Seattle, and that was a lot of fun to see both my friends and my family interact together.

Lately, I had some trouble trying to come up with anything for these sketches. Part of it was being sick, the other was just getting stressed out about how I draw since I’m putting these on the web for people to see. I check out some artists’ blogs every once in a while and some of them have real valuable information in them. However, it’s tempting to mimic another artist’s style that I find appealing. I realized that, while it is helpful to learn from examples, the burden’s still on me to produce my own style. If I can draw well, but have no style, I’m just a drafter, not an artist.

Anyways, enough of my ranting… here are some of the sketches from last week and tonight. Thanks to Michelle for providing the dogs. They’re so cuuute. Enjoy!

Feeling under the weather…

I’m fighting some bug I picked up last night. I tried to do a sketch session today but couldn’t draw worth jack after two hours. I’ll post something better later this week.

Color!

Today I took my first swing at digital painting. I took a cue from some of the guys at ConceptArt.org. I’m more of a pencil-paper guy and haven’t delved into color all that much. Anyways, here’s my first attempt.

See ya…

It was a lot of fun having you around, Clarisse. Hope you have a great time in Arizona. We’ll be missing you at NewGen.

Sketch Session No.3

I struggled through a drawing block today to get these two pages. Hopefully the rest of the week gets better…

Sketch Session No.2

Got a late start tonight. I got pretty dry on my ideas once I got to the third page. I’m feeling a little better with each drawing. I have some books here that will hopefully improve my technique, but I still got a long ways to go. Anyways, enjoy!

Sketch Session No.1

I’m trying to block out my Tuesdays and Thursdays as sketch nights. I need to just sit down and make time for myself.  So this is the first of my sketch sessions. Most of it is drawing whatever comes to mind, sometimes it’s developing something from my little black book. A goal for me is to find my style in the next few weeks. So, without further ado, here are some excerpts from my first sketch session.

Hamsters

Trying to get back in the swing of drawing. Work and life have been keeping me busy this past week and it’s been difficult trying to find time to set aside enough time to draw something decent to post. I’ll try to get post on Tuesdays and Thursdays in addition to the weekends. It gets frustrating, especially whenever I become dissatisfied with work and I feel a real urge to sketch. I know there’s room for a lot of improvement and I would like to devote some time to that. For now, I’ll take what I can get.

Anyways, why hamsters? My roommate in college used to own a white one named Macadamia. For some reason, I was thinking about it at work. I guess when things get busy, I think of hamsters. So when you start seeing lots of cute fluffy animals, it just means I’m super crunched for time.

Birthday Drawing

  • by

In August, I was commissioned to do a birthday drawing of my friend Ann. The conversation went something like this:

Clara: hey

Me: yo

Clara: you think you could draw a cartoon of Ann for her cake

Me: I’ll try my best

So I did my best. And by “best,” I mean procrastinating until two days before the party and working until late at night. Anyways, it turned out alright I guess. I wasn’t able to go to the party, but someone sent me these photos from the party. Happy birthday, Ann!
