Nolen

Caught!

  • by

So far, feedback on Puddles’ new friend has been mostly positively.¬† I say “mostly” because I noticed one person did not care to welcome him in the comments:

lil’ O: ¬†”What‚Äôs wrong with the dates with me? Am I not good enough for Puddles?!”

Maybe you should tell us what’s wrong, Olwen!

A friend for Puddles

  • by

Lately, Puddles has received a lot of comments, notably from a lot of females. They usually run along the lines of, “Awww, he’s so CUTE!” While there’s nothing wrong with getting compliments from girls for cute animal drawings (take note guys), I do feel like I’ve neglected my male fanbase (all 4 of them). Maybe guys aren’t the complimenting-the-cute-hybrid-animal types. I guess I wouldn’t expect guys to post comments like, “i <3 puddles,” or, “…so adorable!”

(On second thought… checked the comments, scratch that last one out.)

Maybe the guys need someone they can relate to. Puddles needs a friend. He does seem lonely (aside from the dates with Olwen), spending his time scratching his head and confused in his red boots. He needs a pal who will tag along with him and go fishing, play in the rain, and race chipmunks.

He seems like a nice guy, right?

Another idea sketched out

  • by

I finally discovered the joy of using Skype with a webcam.  I got to chat with my sister and show her a little how I do my drawings.  I sketched this up while talking with her.

Anyways, my bro Daren¬†suggested “robots making a human.”¬† I can’t say it’s my best, but practice is practice.

Keep ’em comin’ guys!

Dinner date

  • by

Last week, near the end of the day, I¬†was chatting with my friend to¬†see if she was going to a friend’s birthday dinner.

Olwen: i’m meeting my friend for dinner over in Seattle

Me: ah, gotcha… who’s this “friend?”¬† hmmmMMM?

Olwen: hahaha… who wants to know?

Well I want to know!¬† Who could¬†this mysterious “friend”¬†be?¬† A handsome young playboy?¬† A filthy rich¬†oil tycoon?¬† Smokey the bear?¬† Hmm…

Weekend in Portland

  • by

Took a break to visit Portland this weekend. Got to visit a drive-in at Suburban Chevy in Sandy with my dad and witness one of God’s greatest creations…

[cue angelic music]

Did a quick one in my sketchbook: “When vegetables and fruits don’t get along” by Dara. Thanks for the ideas, guys. Keep ’em comin’!

Movie time and monkeys

  • by

Just got back from watching Iron Man. I’m gonna let this one simmer for a bit before I make a good judgment, but man, it was cool. It’s definitely one of the better Marvel movies out there. The best one that I’ve seen has been Spiderman 2, but that could change. Before seeing this, I limited myself to watching three movies in the theater for the year with one bonus ticket: Wall-E, Dark Knight, and Prince Caspian. Today I used that bonus ticket, and it was well worth it.

The monkey sketch is brought to you by Brenda who suggested “Monkeys playing tennis.” I guess they’re not really playing, but it’s close enough.

Updating website…

  • by

Looks different right? See??? Ok, maybe it’s not that different, but I had to upgrade the code behind this site. Nothing spectacular, and I don’t have any programming skills other than the almighty copy/paste shortcuts. I also downloaded this cool slideshow plugin that Eric showed me called PicLens. It makes viewing albums a lot more fun instead of having to go through each photo one at a time.

I’ve started working on the ideas that were given in the comments, so I’ll have those ready later this week. In the meantime, here are the sketches…

Eric suggested that I draw “two birds, one of them in pursuit of another,” but this isn’t my final sketch on that topic. I have another idea in mind and will probably work on that one this weekend.

My college roommate once had a hamster named Pistachio Macadamia. Cute little guy, but the thing I remember most about him was that he was fat. My roommate was telling about one time when he was studying, Pistachio was running hard in his wheel. He was in a glass aquarium instead of a cage, and the wheel he was running in wasn’t made for fat hamsters like him. So the thing would wobble when he ran fast enough. As my roommate’s studying, Pistachio’s Macadamia’s going crazy on the wheel. Right when he looks over, the hamster slips and ends up shooting out of the thing like a cannon headfirst into glass wall. [THUNK!] He was fine, but for a while he was a little stunned and dazed. Anyways, I don’t know why I didn’t draw a hamster with a concussion, and I don’t know what’s with the can of cola. Maybe it’s the caffeine that got him hopped up in the first place.

Alright, it’s late, I need to get to bed before I ramble a story about Pistachio Macadamia the Fat Concussioned Caffeinated Hamster. I had a couple thoughts on Puddles, but I’ll save that for tomorrow.

An art challenge…

  • by

Today, I had a chat with a friend regarding video games. For a while, she went cold-turkey on World of Warcraft for a little while but then today relapsed to her old ways. I jokingly chastised her about breaking her vow and told her she couldn’t play that game until her newborn son could walk. So out of that, we made a bet. She has to stay away from WoW until her son is able to take 20 steps unassisted while I have to produce at least one “produced” drawing a week by 12:00 am on Sunday. And by “produced,” she means at the quality of the monster bunny picture I made a while back. Initially, the wager was coffee (not the cheap stuff), but once the bet got bigger, we’ll have to do something else.

I don’t think we’re starting the bet this week, since I’ve already lost 3 days. The good news is that you’ll start getting (hopefully) better, or at least interesting, drawings every Sunday. The bad news will be me tearing out my hair trying to figure out what to draw every Saturday night. I’ll try to keep up the sketches as frequently as I can. If anything, it’s practice, and this will force me to get faster with my work. If you guys have ideas for the Sketches of the Day, add a comment to his post.

The think-tank wasn’t working too good today…

I’ve dinked around with this character for a bit, but haven’t settled on a design yet. I feel like I’m starting to get what I want in this design. I imagine her being some kind of pilot or flying around on something high above. I’ll revisit this one later.

Sketches of the day

Here’s the sketch idea that Eric suggested yesterday:

“draw me a picture of a class room full of [something random]”

Yes, Lord Eric! Your wish is my command!

Can you find the culprit?

An inside joke. One of my friends was complaining about her laundry list of important things to do. Upon being told to finish the work instead of chatting, she defiantly told me I couldn’t “crack the whip from Seattle.” I know, it’s not that funny, but whatever, I don’t care. So Yuki, now everyone here knows that you’re slacking. Stop chatting and get back to work.

I’ve also been getting a lot of comments about the polar bear/turtle that I posted a couple days ago. So far, “Burt” and “Snuffles” were suggested. “Burt” was good, but might sound a little ordinary to some folks, but we’ll call him a polar burtle (polar bear + turtle). I could do something like Buffles, but then that sounds too much like “buffalo.” Glenda suggested “Puddles,” but that doesn’t make much sense for a polar burtle (why am I writing this?), so we’ll slap on some red rain boots for good measure. So there you have it: Puddles, the polar burtle with his red rain boots scratching his head because he’s just as confused as the rest of you.

Tulips!

Visited Mount Vernon for the tulips festival held this month. Even though there weren’t that many colors, it was still worth the hour drive… courtesy of Waiki.
